SuSE 7.1 Release 24th February 2001
|
Our second meeting in February proved
to be very popular with the local Linux users. About 22 people turned
up for a meeting at Blackwell's bookshop which was all about the new release
of SuSE Linux which is the 7.1 version at the time of writing.
We had to wait until 3 p.m. for Ruediger Berlich to arrive. He was stuck on the motorway for a long time. When he did arrive we helped him in through the door with his hardware. Ruediger started by showing us that he was using ordinary hardware to install SuSE Linux. He then asked all of us if there was anyone in the audience who hadn't used Linux. One of us was an MS Windows user so Ruediger asked him to help install SuSE 7.1. That's the picture at the top left of this page. He then gave us the full presentation that he is so good at. He explained some facts and figures to do with the use of Linux on servers and on the desktop. Also Linux for Macintosh. Of particular interest was the fact that desktop use of Linux is still increasing which must be a worry for companies that manufacture software for non-Linux systems. The use of SuSE Linux and it's place in the international market is also part of his talk. All of this is very interesting. The assembled audience was very impressed by the whole demo. They asked many questions. Everyone said that they would like to see another one. The question and answer session went on for more than an hour. We finished at 5 p.m. and helped Ruediger to get his computers back into his car. At 9 p.m. the regular contributors to our LUG assembled for dinner at the Trattoria Sorrento at Crookes. Also known as Luigi's place. The pictures for the dinner are to the right of this page. Sheffield Linux User's Group has now been running for two years in it's present form. We wanted to celebrate the fact that we had been around for that length of time. There's was also the release of SuSE 7.1 to have a few drinks over. Everyone thought that the food was really good. Fuad who is our Yemeni IT person didn't seem to be all that keen on Italian food :) Can't win them all I suppose ? We look forward to the rest of the year and whatever that brings. The news is that we will have our own stand at the Linux Expo in Birmingham in September. That should raise a few eyebrows ? Hope we see you at our meetings.
