Sponsors
Sheffield Linux User Group is regularly helped
out by businesses and Universities in this country and from others in other
countries. A brief summary of sponsors is shown below.
Blackwell's provided floor space for our Linux Demo Days which took
place at their West Street branch. This was a great success and we arranged
a
Demo Week for the back end of 1999 . Blackwell's have also given books which
helped with the production of this web site. There were some really nice
people in the West Street shop. Click on the logo to go to their site.
Our monthly meetings took place at West Street which is one of the best
branches of Blackwell's bookshops. We did have many meetings at the West
Street branch. This has now finished and we have now moved to Sheffield
Hallam University where our monthly meetings take place on Saturday afternoons.
Dinning Area Regeneration Trust
have sponsored our Linux User's Group. With their help we were
able to pay for a meeting room at Sheffield Hallam University.
O'Reilly books very kindly donated books for our demo days they
have also given away books for our infrequent LUG draw. As we all know
they produce excellent books at normal prices and both Wrox Press and O'Reilly
books are hoping to produce many more Linux books which will help all of
us. If you look at the O'Reilly.com site in the States (rather than the
UK one) you can find an address for suggestions. So.. if you want to write
a book why not send them some e-mail. Click on the logo for the UK site.

pages.
Red Hat have provided software for Sheflug and they say that they
will provide more in future. They are one of the leading Linux software
companies and in spite of their recent public financial deal they are continuing
to provide support for open source projects. Their software is know to
be very reliable and several clones have been produced some of which are
slightly better. The fact that clones have been produced should explain
to you how good their software really is.
SuSE have supplied many CDs and software for our demo
days. They have also provided much technical support. They are the best
European manufacturer of Linux software. Their operating systems are easy
to use and understand (apart from the German bits). This is heavily GPL'd
software. The 8.2 version comes with several books and many CDs full of software.
Only one of these is needed to install a working system. Since SuSE 7.0
came along there have been many changes. There is now an SuSE version for
SPARC, PPC, Alpha and Intel platforms. Everyone is saying "if only we could
have done this ten years ago". The latest SuSE Online newsletter shows
Blinux. This is an SuSE project for blind users of Linux software. The
B means braille.
VMWare have provided much help for our LUG and were hoping to come
to our December demo days at Blackwell's. If you want to know more about
this intriguing crash proof software then click on the logo. VMWare will
allow you to use just about any software on any other software. A virtual
machine within a system.
Applixware have supplied a great deal of software for our demo days.
They also produce Office Suite 99 for SuSE. Applixware is one of the best
office suites for Linux and the new 5.0 version is to be recommended to anyone.
If you don't want to use Linux as server software and you want more from
it then you should consider Applixware.
Transtec have sponsored Sheflug. They are an international
company who provide all kinds of hardware from small servers up to the big
stuff. Their site can provide you with a few surprises so why not click
on the logo and have a look ?
Alpha Processors Incorporated provided an Alpha machine for our Linux Demo week in December 1999. They were also able to provide us with a very able technician who did a very good job of selling Alpha products. API are doing very well just now and we know that they will continue to be a success.
Sheffield Computing Services
Sheffield Computing Services are at
23-27 Taplin Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield S6 4JD. They provided two
Linux PCs for our Christmas 2000 demo days at Blackwell's bookshop at
West Street in Sheffield. Also for one of our seminars at Sheffield
Wednesday's football ground. They can be very helpful. If you
want to ask about hardware you can phone them at 0114 281 9333. They
also have a web site which you can view by clicking here.
