September 2001 Meeting
The September meeting turned out to be a fairly lively
ocassion that involved about twenty people in a longish and convoluted
discussion. The Sheffield Hallam University venue is well established
now and many people have said that they like to go there and they also like
the facilities that are available.
Guennadi Liakovehtski informed us that he is now moving on to other places.
He was something of a live wire while he was here. We wish him
well in his new line of work. Sanjay Nayak stopped by at our meeting
on the way back to Bombay where he lives. As we all know many of the
Indian programmers love Linux and don't want anything else. Sanjay
says he will return and he promises to come to another meeting. Ruthie
came to see us again from the deep dark north of . We were able to help
her with Apache and a few other things. As she left through the door
at the end of the meeting she said something like .. I learned more today
than I did at most other times... or .. it was something like that.
Richard Lewellyn Davies was still trying to work out how to get his
scanner to work. Lets hope someone works it out for him. James
Bruce came along with his own personal laptop - not the one from work - and
I helped him to install some SuSE 7.2 updates. He was very impressed.
Pieter Miering was able to give up some of his very precious
time to come over and help with some basic tech support. It was really
good to see him. He spends most of his spare time running our mailing
list archive and the rest of it trying to keep his own tribe in order.
At the time of writing the 2.4 kernels have been around for some months
but are only just now beginning to show some form of maturity and stability.
The 2.2 version of KDE has been released to much acclaim and GNOME 1.4
is very much in use with much talk from Ximian of .NET for Linux. It
remains to be seen whether the mono project will become more prominent. Many
of us think that it will be a great success. GNOME itself will soon
become the default desktop on most newly manufactured HP machines.
The other popular desktops which are Windowmaker and XFCE are also racing
ahead in the popularity stakes. KDE 3.0 is said to be with us any day
now and many Unix and Linux people really would like to see the new version.
We enjoyed our meeting and as always we look forward to the next one
and many more.
Our main event this month was to have been the Linux Expo in Birmingham.
It was cancelled leaving us sitting here twiddling our thumbs. We
look forward to May when we are informed that this event will take place.
