Our May meeting which took place on the 29th of
May at the Country Bookshop at Hassop station at Bakewell was very much
like previous bank holiday meetings. We usually find that
everyone gets into a car so that they can sit on the M1 or M62 and
"enjoy" themselves with the bank holiday experience. This means
that bank holiday meetings can be very quiet.

About five of us turned up for the meeting. Rained in the morning
but by the time the meeting got under way at about 14.00 a few people
had arrived for the monthly discussion about about latest issues to do
with Free and Open Source software. We were able to come up
with a few ideas for future meetings. Someone was asking about
databases yet again. Supposedly MySQL is used in a lot of places
but he couldn't agree on that and anyway who would use GNU/Linux for
anything anyway. He must have missed out on our annual seminar at
www.swf.co.uk in March where Ruediger Berlich showed the latest figures
for the uptake of GNU/Linux into the world of commerce. The
figures for this are quite incredible. For those of us - like
myself - who started out with Linux back in 1993 it's all a bit
difficult to take in.
The Linux Expo which took place earlier this year in London attracted
some attention and was the subject of some conversation. Some
people thought it was good and others weren't too sure about it.
I missed it because I had to be elsewhere.
Once again everyone said thank you for the useful items of food that
arrived from the cafe. A great venue. Always relaxed
and confortable. Good to see a crowd of people enjoying
themselves whilst indulging their interest in GNU/Linux. It would
be good to see more people coming along with PCs and laptops but you
don't always know who will come along to a meeting. Don't forget,
there is a large and free car park at this venue. You can park
right outside the door. You can also take the 240 bus from
Sheffield Interchange which stops not fart away from Country
Bookshop. Call 01709 515151 for more info about public transport.
Due to pressure from public holidays our next meeting will be at the
same venue on the 3rd of July. We hope that you have the
time to come along and join in with the rest of us. You can be
reasonably certain that you will meet someone who can help you with
your interest in GNU/Linux. Any of the issues that may be
involved with it's use or misuse can be discussed at
length. Most people who go to our meetings are well
informed and they do like to help other people.
