May Meeting
Stoddart building
|
May was the first time
that we held a meeting at the new venue at Sheff
ield Hallam University. It was a nice sunny day outside and six
people were tempted to turn up for the meeting. Looks as though some
of us can't find the new meeting room. The Stoddart building is also
known as the IT Foundry.
We were all very impressed with the facilities that SHU has to offer to our LUG. It's a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Four hours of tech support and friendly chat set the world to rights and put all of us in touch with our own ideas. James Mears came to see us for the first time. We think it was the attraction of a car park only a few yards away that pulled him in from a warm and comfortable bank holiday weekend at home. Sammy Redshaw finally gave up his struggle with Mandrake and refused to accept help with an SuSE install or Red Hat. He decided that it was time to try Debian. So, Craig spent most of the afternoon installing Debian 2.2 r3 into his machine. The KDE 2.1.1 updates from the Sourceforge site proved to be completely unusable so Craig had to set him up with Windowmaker instead. This is in fact the choice of the author of this page - I'd recommend it to anyone. After four hours of the usual stuff we went downstairs to the car park and shoved off for home and the pub. We look forward to June when we hope that the people who were lost this month turn up for another excellent meeting. If you do have an interest in Linux please do come along. Bring your Penguin or possibly even a friend. Don't just sit there trying to understand a man page come and ask questions :)
