All mailing lists have a set of commands for subscribing
and unsubscribing. Nearly all list administrators are asked the same
questions all of the time. That's why this page was written.
If you aren't too sure about subscribing to our list or if you have other
questions you might want to print this page out ?
You can do most things with our mailman interface to our discussion
list. To do that point your browser at ....
http://sheflug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/sheflug_sheflug.org.uk
Using this web page and your browser you can tell Mailman
that you do not wish to receive mail for a short period. Useful if
you are going on holiday. You can also use it to set the digest mode
so that you receive a bulk mailing of previous e-mail from the list instead
of the usual slow trickle. There are also other useful options. Have
a look at the web page above for more info.
The posting of HTML mail is very thoroughly discouraged. You
might also like to know that more than one or two of the people on the list
have spent a long time writing e-mail applications. They would prefer
it that you could learn to edit e-mail properly. As a reference you
might want to have a look at...

As
well as this one it's a good idea to take a look at some useful info
about e-mail signatures. Lot of people think that it's funny or
trendy to send long signatures in their daily e-mail. This is not
so. No one likes it and no one will be impressed. The
normal signature is just your first name and nothing else. You might get away with just two lines.
There are times when people post mail as top posted
mail. This is the kind of thing that low cost ISPs tend to do. The
people on our list don't like this kind of top posted mail either. You
might want to think and edit before you post. Have a look at this .....
If you don't you might find
that someone shouts at you in a very unfriendly way. We think that
you should know about this. Bad language is generally frowned upon
and so is aggression. We lost a few people through that kind of thing.
Mostly students. By
and large it's a friendly list. Something else that comes up
from time to time is that people seem to think that they are Sheflug
members if they subscribe to our list. This is not so. You
have to go to meetings in order for people to see your face and
recognise you as a member. Most clubs and societies do things
that way. Come along to the meetings if you have the time
otherwise we'll just see your e-mail.
All of the above helps you to communicate effectively. To be even more effective with e-mail communication you
should read our emoticons page.
This will help other people to understand what it is that you are saying to them.
We hope that you find our discussion list to be informative and that
you may be able to smile at some of the other Linux people at some time :-)
