June 2001 Meeting

The June 2001 meeting proved to be one the traditional Sheflug get togethers where a small group of people have a chat about the latest stuff and what to do to fix their machines.

Two new people came along.  Ruth Gunstone made it over from Stocksbridge and managed to be in a good mood at the same time.  Ruth works at the University of Sheffield.  She said to me that every time that she tried to put together some kind of IT meeting or educational thing at Shef U. no one turned up.  No problem with that kind of thing with Linux people.  We just can't get rid of them.   John Shanley turned up as well.  He was in his lunch hour and looking for Mandrake 8.0 CDs.  I said I wasn't psychic and I hadn't brought them with me.

Whilst I was chatting to John and Ruth Craig Andrews and James Mears got to work on setting up James's home machine so that we could update his system with the latest software.  Later on we installed his second user IBM notebook with SuSE 7.1 and updated it at the same time.

Boris Duerner came to see us once again.  Always good to see him around.  He was having problems with his notebook hard drive.  It was doing some strange things and so Craig sorted it our for him.  Kind of thing that you need a 2lb engineers hammer for :)

All in all it was pretty good and very much the kind of thing that LUG meetings should be about.  The only thing that worried myself was how four different people could all look like each other ?  Long hair, glasses and similar facial features.  Perhaps human cloning is already upon us and one day all Linux user's will look the same and sound the same ?

Next month Ruediger Berlich will be with us once again to give us the latest stuff about SuSE Linux 7.2.  He's always a popular chap and we look forward to more of his observations about Linux and the Linux community.
