July 2001 Meeting

The July meeting was pretty much like the kind of thing that we are used to.  Ten people turned up for a really good session over two laptops and one desktop which was supplied by Matt Fairtlough.  We haven't seen Matt at our meetings before and so it was a great pleasure to meet him.

Alex Hudson and Graham Hunter came to see us as well.  Alex is one of the people who helped to start Sheflug back in 1999.

The July Meeting Just as well that Alex turned up.  We needed all of his skills to sort out Matt's machine.  For some reason the people at Gentus had put multiple partitions into his machine and unknown to him it hadn't been properly installed.  We gave Matt a choice of Mandrake, Debian or SuSE 7.2.  He decided to go for the SuSE distribution and an hour later he was sitting there in front of us smiling and playing with a Linux computer that did everything that it was supposed to do. He was very impressed with the new GNOME 1.4 desktop.

One of the new people was David Tian.  David is a Chinese fella who  has lived in England for a long time.  He says that he will shortly be taking a masters degree in Manchester.  Lets hope that he does come to more of our meetings.  Boris Duerner seems to have become one of the regulars.  He's been able to replace the broken hard disk in his laptop. He should now be able to be a happy Linux user with many hundreds of hours behind him.

We also got into a two hour long chat between several new people and their interest in Linux.  Such as .... how do I install it ?  I explained that it was best to bring their machine along so that we could sort them out.  It's quite amazing how long a short chat about Linux can be once you get started on it.
The bit at the end was all about making sure that Matt's machine was working as it should be.

All of this came in the same week as the Linux Expo at Olympia and the UKUUG Developers Conference in Manchester.  It was quite a long session.

We are now looking forward to our own Linux Expo in Birmingham in September and the Linux Beer Hike in August which is in Belgium.
