Jeremy giving his talk to Linux People

Yes, it is Alasdair Kergon with some Linux TAG CDs

Jeremy Allison who works for VA Linux in California came home to Sheffield for a Christmas break.  He very kindly offered to give a presentation at our usual venue which is Blackwell's bookshop at West Street in Sheffield.  The whole thing was put together at very short notice and surprisingly it turned out to be one of our better meetings of the first year of a new century.  The afternoon of the 23rd of December proved to be a jolly occasion.  Twelve people assembled to get some more info from Jeremy.  Only thing that messed up was that Jeremy and myself didn't quite communicate effectively about the fact that he didn't have a projector and I couldn't provide one.  Actually this didn't matter too much because he was able to use his laptop instead which did the job very well.  He was able to bring a large box of goodies with him which included Linux Journal magazines, CDs and bumper stickers.  The kind of things that help people who are new to Samba.

He made his presentation as informal as possible which is just the kind of thing that our LUG really likes.  He started his talk by explaining how Andrew Tridgell started to work on Samba and then went into some network protocols that he was working on at the same time in C++.  Next he explained some simple ideas about smb and nmb and other basic ideas about Samba and then he went on to explain some simple programming ideas about producing Samba software for MS Windows 2000 and UNIX.  He also showed us some simple ideas about kernel oplocks.  Some of the stuff he told us about his programming experiences with the MS people was extremely funny.  Especially the bits about network security.

The middle bit of his talk was about how Samba and Wins servers actually work and how netbios works with UNIX and MS Windows.   This was the most interesting part of the talk and well worth being a part of if you are someone who would like to know more.

One of the pleasant surprises of this session was that Alasdair Kergon came to see us from Oxford.  He brought some Linux TAG CDs with him.  Alasdair is one of the UKUUG committee members.  We haven't seen him since last year and we do hope that he comes back to see us soon.

Jeremy provided us with a really good talk.  Everything that we wanted.  We do hope that he might be able to come back at some time in the future.

Next one is on the 13th of January.  We look forward to seeing you there.
