December 2001 Meeting
The December meeting was held on a sunny Saturday afternoon
at the IT Foundry. Strangely enough in the year when we decided not
to have any Linux Demo Days or any Linux Seminars in Sheffield the weather
turned the rain stopped and the sun came out.
About twenty-five of us arrived in the course of the afternoon to ask questions
and to find out what our meetings are about. Amin arrived to see us
for the first time. He recently moved from Arizona to England and just
now he's settling into his new house in Sheffield. We hope that everything
turns out well for him.
Most of the afternoon's session was about configuration problems or questions
about what it is that we do which were being asked by people we hadn't seen
before. Fortunately we are in a good situation to cover this kind of
thing. We have several people who can answer even the most obscure
questions about Linux and even some developers who want to join in so that
they can have a friendly conversation with someone else without a senior
manager shoving his or her head round the door and telling them to get on
with something else.
We were playing with the idea of going to a local pub for a Christmas
session but the spirit seems to have died on the day. I spent most
of the afternoon trying to sort out my own laptop which refuses to do anything
even vaguely sensible after an upgrade.
It was quite definitely one of the better meetings of the year and time has
helped all of us to understand what is a good meeting and what is something
that we could do without.
We do hope that we will see you at the next one which will be on the 5th
of January. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2001/2002 to all
our readers.
Lets hope that the world will be a happier place next year and that all of
our meetings will be as good as we hope they will be :) We do
have more than one or two special ocassions organised. More on those
in the coming weeks.
