On the week of our August 2004 meeting most of
North and South Yorkshire was flooded out by the usual heavy
rain. On the 14th of August we found that the sun came out and
temperatures of 23 Celsius were upon us. Much
happiness for people who came along to our meeting at the
Country
Bookshop in Baskewell.

Being
a typical holiday period not many people turned up for the meeting but
those who did were in high spirits and looking forward to another
Saturday afternoon seesion of the latest GNU/Linux stuff.
Rob Keeling came over from Queen Elizabeths school in Ashbourne to help
out. Some of the other regulars also turned up for what turned
out to be a good example of the kind of public event that LUG meetings
are about.
In between the coffee and biscuits and pork pies we were able to put
together a few things in our heads which hadn't made a lot of
sense. There was some discussion about bugs in the 2.6.5 to 2.6.8
kernels. This resulted in some very peculiar distribution specific
problems which were hard to believe or take in. For example, the
SuSE 2.6.5-7 kernel release wasn't really as good as it could have been
until a third or fourth release of the kernel came along. The
2.6.5-7.104-default kernel was the final and stable update which
everyone feverishly downloaded. In some cases the original
release of SuSE 9.1 wouldn't install on some hardware due to the fact
that the kernel wouldn't boot to allow instalation. All of this
is now behind us and at the time of writing the 2.6.8 kernel has just
been released. More fun and games to follow was the comment which
was heard at the meeting. Sadly, as is the case sometimes, our
attempt at a wireless network failed. Better luck next
time.
We look forward now to our Autumn season where we return once more to
the Hillsborough Hotel. Many a jolly meeting has taken place here
including sessions with Rusty Russel and many others. We also
have a working series of presentations which take place at this time of
the year in places like Sheffield Hallam University and The University
of Sheffield. Last year we had what could only be described as
world beating public talks. This year promises to be just
as good. We hope to run an experimental WiFi connection at our
September meeting. No guarantee that it will work but by the time
October comes around it should be working well.
If you have an interest in this kind of thing and you would like to
witness one of our public presentations please do come along.
Keep an eye on
the meetings page for more information.
